The term transgender (related to transcending gender) describes someone who has an abnormal/unusual gender identity. This includes people whose mental gender is opposite that of their physical, as well as people who do not define themselves as a gender (termed genderqueer).
A person who identifies as, or desires to live and be accepted as, a member of the sex opposite to that assigned at birth, is also called transsexual.
- People born female who identify with and transition into male identities are usually abbreviated "FtM" and known as trans men.
- People born male who identify with and transition into female identities are usually abbreviated "MtF" and known as trans women.
An antonym created for transgender to refer to normal people is "cisgender".
